Pug Dogs - Breed History

The Pug is an ancient breed whose origins started in China as far back as 400 BC. The Pug has some similar features with the Pekingese. This small oriental dog brought to Europe, together with silk and other merchandise, as a trade item between China and the Western world. There are a number of theories as far as the breed's origins are concerned. However, all of them are rather vague. The Pug may be the result of a crossing with a small Bulldog. Another idea is that the breed is a variety of the Dogue de Bordeaux.

The 16th century is known as the time when Pugs were in vogue in the European Courts. The AKC recognized Pugs in 1885.

Pugs are even-tempered, playful, charming and smart, and these affectionate dogs are easily trained. Pugs can make good watchdogs and wonderful family friends.
