The breed probably originated in China, and first species arrived in Holland around the turn of the 17th century with tradesmen. The Dutch called them Mopshonds, and this name is still in use. In Spain the breed was called Dogullo, in France – Carlin, in Italy – Caganlino, and in Germany – Mops.
